Epic Modified Battle Between Veterans - Tony Hanbury Gets It Over TJ Potrzebowski at Chemung

The season is nearly two months old, and Chemung Speedrome was able to run its fourth show, but the only one where rain wasn't a constant threat. Winners on the longest day of the year included Tony Hanbury (Buckley's Automotive Modifieds), Devin Gullo (Marion Decker Agency Hobby Stocks), Gene Purvis (Gene's Automotive 4 Cylinders), and Dallas Harbst (Bandoleros). Racing continues this Friday at the Speedrome, presented by Jim Bronson and Ferrario Auto Team of Sayre, PA.
In Buckley's Automotive Modified action, Tony Hanbury ran the car normally driven by Nick Robinson, who is recovering from wrist surgery. Several years have gone by since Hanbury last won at Chemung, but he changed all that on Friday night. TJ Potrzebowski led the opening lap, with Nick Morich right behind him. Six cautions over the course of the 30-lap feature slowed the action but provided some intense restarts. By lap six Hanbury had advanced from fourth to second. A lap 10 restart brought him to the front row for the restart. Potrzebowski held the lead but, following the next restart it was Hanbury who had the lead on lap 10. Another caution led to another restart and some side-by-side racing involving the two leaders. Potrzebowski led lap 13 but Hanbury led the 14th lap. Meanwhile, Jesse Kent was advancing and turned the two-car breakaway into a three-car breakaway. His battle for second with Potrzebowski, however, enabled Hanbury to increase his advantage over both. He sailed across the finish line for the win, over Potrzebowski, Kent, Kevin Youngs, and Morich. "That was some good racing with TJ. Weíve been racing each other for 20 years around here and elsewhere. He ran me clean. I owe him one," Hanbury said following his win.
On the eve of his 14th birthday, Devin Gullo put together a sweep in the Marion Decker Agency Hobby Stock division. Starting third, he wasted no time taking the lead and left Mark Taylor behind to battle Brain DeMark. The first caution came out six laps into the 20-lap race and Gullo held off DeMark on the restart. Caution fell again when four cars got together in turn four. A lap later it was Josh Parker who came to a stop, and it was caution period number three. On each of these restarts Gullo prevailed, with DeMark right behind him. Anthony Gullo had moved up to fifth and then took fourth from Mike Kintner. Over the final seven laps it was apparent that either Devin or Brian would win this one. Devin settled that and earned his second win this year. "Brian was fast. If I hadn't held the lead on those restarts it could have a whole different race," Gullo said in victory lane.
Gene Purvis, point leader, and Greg Moldt, defending track champion, got things going in the Gene's Automotive 4 Cylinder division by picking up the heat wins. When the 20-lap feature was over, Purvis had won his third feature in four events, for his second sweep this year. The only caution came out after just one lap completed. Matt Jenkins took the lead from Augustine Worden and held it until Purvis took over on lap four. He and Jenkins ran together for several laps, but Moldt came along and took over third and then second. Purvis held on for the win, with Moldt, Jenkins, Monica Robinson and Ryan Purvis finishing behind him. "I'm in a fast car. If I don't make any mistakes ,we're ok," he said after referring to what he felt was a challenging race early on.
A pair of cautions slowed the 8-lap Bandolero feature. Easton Houghtaling, an Outlaw, led early over Outlaw Tori Miller and Bandit driver Dallas Harbst. Millerís spin brought out the first yellow, six laps in. A lap later, all three racers were involved in an incident in turns one and two. Houghtaling got into Miller's car, and Harbst spun to avoid them. On the final restart, Harbst led the way but when Houghtaling slowed in turn two the race was over. Dallas Harbst picked up the win over Miller (Outlaw winner) and Houghtaling. In victory lane Harbst dedicated the win to his great grandmother, Nancy Frisbee, who passed away earlier this year.
Friday night action continues June 27th. Pits open at 5 PM, grandstand and practice at 6, and racing starts at 7 PM sharp. Adult admission is $15, $13 for seniors, $5 for kids ages 5-12 and free for kids under age 5.
